Freak Island is written by M. Hokazono. The Family were born on the large island, and was originally made from Yoshikazu and his mother, Otoki. Together, they worshiped Zanta Maria, a mysterious entity. A Vatican agent named Mariko Glaccias was sent to discover Zanta Maria and that is were she met Yoshikazu, who summoned Zanta Maria where she said to him that the two would meet. After which, they fell in love and had two children, Mari and her brother Kaoru. After this, she left her family to inform the Vatican about her discovery and the family discovered the stones which they used to empower themselves and then attack some civilians. This angered the mayor, Hanakuro, who called for back up, attacking and torturing the family until Zanta Maria appears and saves them.

Taking control of the island, Yoshikazu made deals with the government and the yakuza for the power of the magic and later making sacrifices for Zanta Maria. During the events of Offal Island, Alice and her crew visited the island and were attacked by the trio of Mari, Yoshikazu, and Kaoru due to the latter thinking that Alice is his mother. Also during this time, Hankuro, his rebels, and Alice were mutated alongside the family. Mariko finally returns to her family at some point and later uses her magic to revive Otoki and later had three more children with Yoshikazu, the twins Anna and Kanna as well as their youngest child Satoru.

During the events of Freak Island the family members go after a group of university students. Kaoru and Mari were now young adults and They had also capture a young woman named Ami Murata. During this time, Takahisa would later become a mutant himself and Mari would fell in love with him, wanting to marry him while Kaoru would later fall in love with Ami, due to her believing that she is connected to Zanta Maria. The family would host a wedding for the two and Takahisa used the family conflit to their advantage until it backfired with the Catholic Church appearing led by Archbishop Maximillon, their arrival caused by the Child of Perception being born. The family members went after the recently born Child of Perception, killing it and using its remains to make soup to grant their wishes. The death of the child caused corpses to rise as zombies, with the family and Takahisa teaming up to survive it.
