The Nuzlocke Challenge is a set of guidelines designed to make playing the Pokémon video games more challenging. Several challengers believe that the regulations also encourage the use of Pokémon that a player might not often pick and foster stronger relationships with the player's Pokémon. As the rules are self-imposed by the player and thus flexible, they are not a feature of the game.
The challenge's name comes from a comic book series of the same name, which frequently includes a character named John Locke who resembles Nuzleaf from the Lost series as a comedy.
An essential Nuzlocke challenge rule is:
1. A Pokémon must be permanently released or kept in a PC box and not used again if it faints, at which point it is deemed "dead."
2. Just the first Pokémon that a player sees in a new region can be caught. They must give up the chance to catch a Pokémon in that region if the first encounter is one they already own or are unable to capture.
3. To establish a closer emotional connection with every Pokémon they capture, players must give them nicknames.
4. Healing items can only be used a certain amount of times during combat or not at all.
